SHADOWING

LEVEL: A1-C2
GRADE: any
LENGTH: 5-10 minutes
TOPIC: working on pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and melody of English

HOW TO:

Shadowing is a language learning technique where you repeat an audio just after you hear it. You’re acting like an “echo” or a “shadow”. You listen to the words and then say them back out loud while trying to mimic the melody, rhythm, and pronunciation of the speaker as close as possible.

For this type of exercise, you should choose someone whose English you like because the goal is to sound just like them. You can do this while listening to podcasts, watching TV shows or movies.

VERSION 1

Listen to a bit, stop it and try to mimic rhythm, intonation, melody, and pronunciation. There are lots of videos available, this one is great for beginners.

VERSION 2

You’re not listening to the audio, stopping it, and then repeating it. You’re repeating it as you’re listening, in real-time, with as little delay as possible.
