LEVEL: A2-C1
GRADE: any
LENGTH: 45 minutes
TOPIC: learning information about apartheid, predicting the story
HOW TO:
Start the lesson by giving students the first part of the worksheet WHAT IS APARTHEID? Give them a few minutes to read it, let them google difficult or unknown words, and find mistakes. After an appropriate amount of time (about 5 min), get over the paragraphs with them, check the mistakes and talk about apartheid (giving them more information and putting it into context).
Then give students the next part of the worksheet titled READING 1. Give them a few minutes to read it, let them google difficult or unknown words, and find mistakes. After an appropriate amount of time (about 8 min), get over the beginning of the story with them, check the mistakes and let them predict where the story is going or why it just happened.
Lastly, give students the last part of the worksheet titled READING 2. There are no mistakes in this part. Give them a few minutes to read it, and let them google difficult or unknown words. After an appropriate amount of time (about 10 min), get over the actual ending of the story with them and compare their predictions with what actually happened.
As a bonus, you can introduce the author of the text, which is Trevor Noah, a South-African late night television host. The excerpts are from his book, Born a Crime.
